The Swiss Electricity Agreement Alliance was launched in Bern on 9 September 2026 with Alpiq’s support.
The alliance supports an electricity agreement between Switzerland and the European Union (EU), which is currently being debated by the Swiss Parliament and will also need to be approved by voters.
The agreement will provide access to the European internal electricity market, enhance security of supply and grid stability, and reduce system costs.
It is essential for Switzerland to remain a strong business location.
What is the electricity agreement about?
The electricity agreement will give Switzerland access to the European internal electricity market, regulate cross-border electricity trading, harmonise security standards and ensure Swiss participation in the relevant EU bodies. For both sides, the priority is security of supply, which no European country can achieve on its own in a highly interconnected energy system.
An alliance for Switzerland’s energy future
The Swiss Electricity Agreement Alliance was launched in Bern on 9 September. Alpiq CEO Antje Kanngiesser was in attendance and took to the podium. Through the alliance, companies, associations and other stakeholders from the business and energy sectors are supporting an electricity agreement between Switzerland and the EU. Their shared goal is to provide the public with objective information about the importance of the agreement and to highlight its benefits for security of supply, the economy and the energy transition.
Without an electricity agreement and without faster domestic expansion, the risks for Switzerland will increase significantly.
