Lausanne – Alpiq is expanding its position in the European flexibility market and has secured its first 370 MW project pipeline for battery energy storage systems (BESS) in Germany. The plants are planned in the regions of Brandenburg and Saxony-Anhalt in cooperation with SPP Development GmbH & Co. KG, an experienced developer with over 15 years of market presence.
With this partnership for the further development of a 370 MW pipeline for BESS assets in Germany, Alpiq is combining its expertise in operating flexible assets, its financial strength and its strategic commitment to the German BESS market with the regional expertise and technical competence of SPP Development. Together, the companies are laying the foundation for the successful implementation of BESS projects that will make a decisive contribution to the energy transition and enable the expansion of electricity production from renewable energies.
With the strong and rapid growth in renewable energy production from wind and solar power in Germany, demand for short-term energy storage solutions and grid stability measures is increasing significantly. BESS technology plays a central role in meeting these challenges and thus strengthens security of supply. The cooperation between Alpiq and SPP Development will make an important contribution to the flexibility landscape in Germany. The projects are expected to reach ready-to-build status and brought construction readiness in 2026.
"Germany is a competitive and complex market for battery storage, many projects are queuing for grid access and permits. SPP Development's regional roots and experience, combined with Alpiq's financial strength and long-term commitment, form a strong basis to deliver these projects," says Lukas Gresnigt, Head International and member of the Executive Board of Alpiq.
With its highly flexible hydropower portfolio and thermal power plants, Alpiq has over 100 years of expertise in operating flexible assets. Alpiq is pursuing a clear strategy to further expand its leading position in this field in Europe – both in the area of hydropower and through the targeted expansion of battery storage facilities.
Alpiq recently reached two important milestones: in October, Alpiq commissioned its first own BESS (30 MW / Valkeakoski, Finland) and at the end of November, Alpiq concluded an innovative tolling agreement in Germany for the 103.5 MW Schuby large-scale battery storage facility (federal state of Schleswig-Holstein). Alpiq has also acquired a 125 MW BESS project in Haapajärvi (Finland), which is scheduled to go into operation in mid-2027. In France, the company is developing a 100 MW BESS in La Corne-en-Vexin, which is scheduled to go online in early 2027. In Switzerland, Alpiq has been successfully marketing third-party batteries since 2018 and manages a 50 MW portfolio in Switzerland, for example.
The investment in the BESS portfolio in Germany once again underlines Alpiq's commitment to supporting the energy transition and contributing to a sustainable energy future.
