Buchholz small-scale hydropower plant

In 1892, in order to drive his mill with hydropower, Victor Eberle constructed a 15 meter high concrete dam in the bed of the River Glatt on the border between the municipalities of Gossau and Flawil (canton of St. Gallen). After the mill went out of business in 1909, the strong sedimentation led to the creation of an environmentally significant wetland landscape. The poor condition of the dam and concerns about the security of the villages downstream resulted in the decision to modernise the weir and to incorporate a small hydroelectric power station. The Buchholz small hydropower plant has been operational since 2006.
