Alpiq boosts flexibility strategy through majority stake in Harmony Energy

09.07.2026, 10:00 | Media release

Lausanne / Knaresborough – Alpiq is acquiring a 90 per cent stake in Harmony Energy, a pan-European developer and operator of battery energy storage systems (BESS). The acquisition strengthens Alpiq’s flexibility solutions by adding a high-quality development platform and a multi-gigawatt pipeline of battery storage projects across key European markets. It also establishes Alpiq as one of the leading BESS players in Europe.

Both parties share a clear ambition: to accelerate the energy transition by rapidly delivering large-scale battery storage solutions that provide much-needed flexibility to the European energy system. The acquisition is therefore fully aligned with Alpiq’s flexibility strategy, strengthening both its asset base and its commercial capabilities. With Harmony Energy, Alpiq expands its presence across the entire BESS value chain – from development and construction through to operation.

By combining Alpiq’s strength in flexible power generation and energy management with Harmony Energy’s excellent development capabilities and project pipeline, we are scaling up in becoming a leading provider of flexibility solutions in Europe.

Antje Kanngiesser, CEO Alpiq

Scaling flexible, low-carbon energy infrastructure across Europe

Harmony Energy is a high-quality development business with a proven track record and a multi-gigawatt pipeline of battery storage projects across key European markets, including the United Kingdom, Germany, France and Poland. Alpiq and Harmony Energy already have an established business relationship, built on Alpiq’s acquisition of two BESS projects from Harmony Energy, including the 100 MW Cheviré site in France, which has created mutual trust at business level and laid the foundation for this important step.

We are happy to welcome the strong team of Harmony Energy to our group. Together, we are accelerating our growth in this strategically important field for the energy transition in Europe.

Amédée Murisier, Head of Assets and Member of the Executive Board Alpiq

The acquisition adds approximately 400 MW of assets under construction to Alpiq’s existing BESS footprint in Europe, including a UK project expected to be connected to the grid as early as Q3 2026, as well as an important project pipeline. Together, these assets and the pipeline put Alpiq on track to build and operate a multi-gigawatt BESS portfolio across Europe over the coming years. Given the scale of its pipeline, Harmony Energy may continue to divest selected projects or assets to third-party investors, as it has done in the past.

Harmony Energy: a proven player accelerating battery storage growth

To date, Harmony Energy has successfully delivered 18 grid-scale BESS projects with a combined capacity of more than 700 MW and has established strong capabilities in project development, construction and the asset management of operating battery storage systems.

Partnering with Alpiq marks an exciting new chapter for Harmony Energy. With Alpiq’s financial strength, market expertise and pan-European footprint, we are well positioned to scale our project pipeline while ensuring continuity for our team and partners.

Peter Kavanagh, co-founder and CEO Harmony Energy

Following completion of the transaction, Harmony Energy will continue to operate as an independent company under its own brand, retaining its team, entrepreneurial culture and operating model. “We’re excited to align with Alpiq, who share our passion for the sector and for sustainability”, says Peter Kavanagh. The co-founder will continue to lead the company as CEO and will retain a ten per cent shareholding in Harmony Energy. Christoph Bellin, Head of BESS at Alpiq, will join Harmony Energy’s Management Board while continuing in his role at Alpiq. The two parties have agreed not to disclose the financial terms of the transaction.
