Lausanne – The Gösgen nuclear power plant (KKG) announced on Friday, 22 August 2025 that electricity production cannot yet be resumed. The restart is expected to be delayed by a further six months until the end of February 2026. Alpiq therefore expects a reduction in income of between CHF 140 million and CHF 160 million for the second half of 2025.
Alpiq is the largest shareholder in Kernkraftwerk Gösgen-Däniken AG, with a 40 per cent stake. Due to the prolonged production outage, Alpiq expects a pro-rata reduction in production of up to 2.2 TWh by the end of February 2026. This will have a significant impact on the expected annual results. From today's perspective, the operating result for 2025 will be CHF 140 million to CHF 160 million lower than planned. The first half of 2025 was not affected by the production outage. The half-year figures will be published as planned on 28 August 2025.
Over the entire period (end of June 2025 to end of February 2026), a total production shortfall at KKG of almost 6 TWh is expected. The lost income for KKG shareholders amounts thus to around CHF 500 million. Alpiq's share amounts to around CHF 200 million.
The condition of the nuclear power plant of Gösgen remains very good. However, regardless of when it was built, a nuclear power plant must comply with the latest scientific and technical standards, and the supervisory authority has adjusted its requirements for KKG within the scope of its regulatory discretion. According to a media release, KKG AG now wants to ensure that the power plant meets these adjusted requirements. For this reason, the restart of the plant is expected to be delayed by a further six months until the end of February 2026.
As a partner plant, KKG supplies its shareholders with electricity in proportion to their shareholdings and has no end customers. The shareholders must procure the electricity now missing on the market at current conditions. This also applies to Alpiq and enables it to meet its contractual obligations towards its customers.
