Battery storage completes the flexibility portfolio

Battery energy storage systems, or BESS, are a key enabler for a secure and sustainable energy future. Alpiq is investing in this technology in a targeted way. BESS are an ideal addition to our existing generation portfolio, which is already highly flexible thanks to our various hydropower plants in Switzerland and gas-fired power plants in Italy, Spain and Hungary.

BESS respond within seconds to short-term fluctuations in the power grid. They strengthen grid stability and security of supply. They also make it easier to integrate growing volumes of renewable electricity from wind and solar, which are highly dependent on weather conditions, into the system.

Our approach is long-term. We develop, operate and optimise battery energy storage systems across Europe. In this way, we are consistently delivering on our strategy and making a measurable contribution to the energy transition. Our BESS portfolio continues to grow. By 2030, we aim to operate a multi-gigawatt portfolio. Today, Alpiq has two BESS in operation (130 MW), while two more BESS (225 MW) are under construction.
