Head Enterprise Risk Management (all)

Olten - 100% | Permanent

Mission: Own and evolve Alpiq’s Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) approach with a focus on operational risks—shaping the ERM framework, increasing transparency on key operational exposures, and enabling risk-informed decision-making across the Group.

Alpiq is seeking a Head of Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) to establish and lead a fit-for-purpose, integrated risk management framework across the organization, with operational risks and the control environment as the main focus. As the ERM framework is currently under development, this role offers a unique opportunity to shape risk governance, methodologies, reporting and risk culture from the ground up.

Reporting to the Chief Risk Officer and leading a team of three, you will drive risk identification and assessment across the organisation, strengthen the design and effectiveness of key controls, and provide an aggregated view of risks for senior management—incl. preparing materials and reporting to the Executive Board and Board of Directors.

This role blends strategic framework design with hands-on execution: facilitating risk and control self-assessments, learning from incidents and near misses, and supporting embedding controls into business processes. You will collaborate closely with colleagues in market, credit and liquidity risk, compliance, finance, legal, security, health & safety and operations to ensure an integrated approach to risk.

Your main responsibilities

As Head of Enterprise Risk Management, you will be responsible for designing, implementing and continuously improving Alpiq’s ERM framework. Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Lead and develop the ERM team (3 FTE): set objectives, coach performance, and ensure high-quality delivery across all ERM processes.
  • Build and roll out the ERM framework in development, prioritising operational risk governance: policies, taxonomy, methodology (incl. RCSA), templates, action tracking and tool.
  • Co-lead project with externals on the ERM Framework.
  • Create a view on operational risks across the Group, including incident/loss data and emerging themes and produce clear operational risk reporting for the CRO and Executive Board. Prepare reporting packages and key messages for the Audit and Risk Committee.
  • Own and further develop the target liquidity model (in coordination with Treasury and Liquidity Risk): refine methodology and assumptions, ensure appropriate governance and controls, and integrate outputs into management reporting and decision-making.
  • Strengthen the operational control environment: drive remediation of control weaknesses, coordinate with internal control, compliance and assurance activities (incl. second line oversight), and ensure clear ownership and follow-through.
Your impact

As Head of Enterprise Risk Management, you will increase transparency on Alpiq’s top risks with a focus on operational risks and the effectiveness of key controls. You will help embed a common operational risk language and practical governance across the Group while the ERM framework is being developed and scaled.

You will:

  • Establish a consistent operational risk view (top risks, trends, concentrations) and enable management to prioritise mitigation actions and resources.
  • Improve the quality, timeliness and narrative of operational risk reporting, including clear insight on key controls, control gaps and remediation progress—enabling effective oversight by the Executive Board and strong Board reporting through the CRO.
  • Build operational risk and control capability across the organisation through facilitation, guidance and training, strengthening risk ownership in the first line.
  • Enhance integration with internal control, compliance and other risk activities to strengthen the operational control environment and provide a coherent, efficient second line.
  • Support strategic projects and change initiatives with operational risk and control assessments, ensuring risks, dependencies and key controls are addressed early and lessons from incidents are applied.
How you will bring our core values to life

Your efforts will be directly aligned with Alpiq's corporate values: "We are ALP1Q," "We learn and grow together," "We share the steering wheel," and "We focus on the outcome," ensuring that we remain at the forefront of the energy industry while fostering a culture of innovation, responsibility, and sustainability:

"We are ALP1Q" – You foster a strong risk culture built on integrity, accountability and constructive challenge, acting as a role model for transparent communication of risks and uncertainties.

"We learn and grow together" – You continuously improve methods and tools, learn from incidents and near misses, and translate lessons into practical guidance that strengthens decision-making and controls.

"We share the steering wheel" – You collaborate across functions and businesses, enabling risk owners to take informed decisions and ensuring risk governance is a shared responsibility—not a silo.

"We focus on the outcome" – You drive ERM delivery with clear priorities and measurable outputs (e.g., risk reporting cadence, KRI quality, action tracking), turning analysis into decisions and tangible mitigation.

Your profile

You are an experienced risk professional with a strong track record in operational risk management and strengthening control environments in complex, regulated settings. You combine analytical rigour with stakeholder management, and you enjoy building pragmatic frameworks that work in practice.

You are comfortable engaging with senior leadership, facilitating workshops, and communicating risk topics clearly balancing independence with partnership.

You bring:

  • At least 10 years of experience in operational risk management, internal control, audit, or a related risk function, ideally in energy, commodities, utilities, finance or other regulated industries.
  • Proven ability to design and implement operational risk / ERM elements (risk taxonomy, RCSA methodology, risk appetite linkages, KRIs/KCIs, incident/loss data, reporting) and to improve them over time.
  • Strong facilitation and stakeholder management skills, with the confidence to challenge constructively and the pragmatism to land solutions.
  • Leadership experience (line or matrix) with a collaborative style; ability to prioritise and deliver through a small team.
  • Excellent communication skills in English (German and/or French are a plus), with strong analytical skills and confidence working with senior stakeholders.
