OKAt this site, Aare-Tessin AG für Elektrizität (Atel) constructed a building for a pilot plant for the production of hydrogen and the operation of two fuel cells in 1991. Atel was one of Alpiq's two predecessors and the test facility contributed to research into future-oriented hydrogen technology. An electrolyser and two fuel cells were housed in the facility. The hydrogen gas was stored in pressure cylinder bundles in the building. For the purpose of safety, Atel equipped the building with an active ventilation system, a detection system and a fire alarm system. After the tests were completed in 1995, the building stood empty for some time.
Today, the building is occupied by the High Voltage Testing and Engineering Commission (FKH, https://fkh.ch/) as an insulating oil laboratory. Today, insulating liquids are vital for assessing the condition of the various elements of the power grid, such as transformers, switches, disconnectors, etc. The FKH analyses such liquids in this laboratory.
