SIG allCap: transparency for energy data

In our daily lives, we encounter SIG products everywhere: At its Swiss site in Neuhausen, the company SIG allCap Ltd manufactures around three billion caps for beverage cartons every year. This globally leading manufacturer of cardboard packaging and filling equipment for beverages and foodstuffs uses over 30 injection moulding machines to manufacture these products, requiring very large amounts of electrical energy and expensive compressed air. For this reason, SIG allCap relies on energy data logging and visualisation from Xamax, an Alpiq brand.

Since 2017, the energy data logging system at the factory in Neuhausen am Rheinfall has encompassed a total of 80 electricity meters and 20 compressed air meters. It is constantly being enlarged and assists the person in charge of energy with transparent analysis. The resulting findings not only make it possible to save costs and kilowatt hours, but also to calculate the energy used for each produced part.

A modular energy data logging system with potential for expansion

Planned by Alpiq and delivered ready-to-use, the energy data logging system has a modular structure and can be adapted to changes in operations at any time. The system includes meters with different communication interfaces; for example, meters with Modbus RTU and Modbus TCP were integrated. In this project, Alpiq has once again exemplarily demonstrated its expertise when it comes to reliable and inexpensive incorporation of an energy management system into a customer's existing infrastructure. "I was impressed by the professional implementation, performance beyond expectations and increased consumption transparency," says Slaven Hegol, Manager of Production Engineering at SIG allCap. The same system can also be used to identify and avoid expensive load peaks.
