Alpiq E-Mobility: Our most important contributions to the mobility transition in 2018

According to a recent report by Reuters, the automotive industry plans to invest at least $300 billion in electric vehicles over the next 10 years. The Volkswagen Group alone will invest $91 billion and is launching the most extensive electrification programme of all car manufacturers: 80 new car models with electric motors by 2025, including some 50 purely electric cars and 30 plug-in hybrids. The progressive electrification of road transport is dramatically changing the automotive industry and how the general public uses cars. As a service-oriented energy company, we are making an important contribution towards ensuring electric mobility is suitable for everyday use.

We are paving the way

Based on the extensive experience we have gained over the past six years, our e-mobility specialists are supporting customers from a wide variety of industries ranging from utilities, automotive, public transport, retail and hospitality, commercial and residential real estate right through to car fleet operators. In 2018, we successfully completed a number of high-profile projects demonstrating our role as a full-service e-mobility provider. The experience gained during such projects combined with our energy expertise puts us in a leading position to support the significant growth of the industry during the coming years.

First 350 kW high-power charging station in Europe

Last June, we were able to set a milestone in the still young history of electric mobility in Switzerland by commissioning Europe’s very first 350 kW charging station. For Ionity, a joint venture consisting of the automobile manufacturers BMW Group, Daimler AG, the Ford Motor Company and the Volkswagen Group including Audi and Porsche, we deployed the ultra-fast charging stations at the Neuenkirch service area on the A2 motorway near Lucerne as well as at the Gotthard service area. Together with Ionity, we also have additional sites in Italy in progress.

An insurance company makes the transition to an electric car fleet

Another highlight in 2018 was the project with Gebäudeversicherung Bern (GVB), which converted its entire vehicle fleet to e-mobility. During the course of this project, we developed the concept, installed the charging solutions and assisted in the implementation. In addition, we applied our comprehensive energy knowledge to solve one of the main challenges: charging the cars during the day without having to increase the existing connected load. Thanks to smart load management solutions and browser-based software from Xamax, we were able to supply the charging stations with energy while avoiding a costly expansion of the grid connection.
