Alpiq, aventron and Chiesi sign PPA for wind asset in Italy

Lausanne/Milan, 7 June 2021 – Alpiq and aventron have signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) in Italy with global pharmaceutical Chiesi Group to supply emission-free energy from a local wind power plant. This co-operation is a further step on the way towards sustainable energy supply.

Specialists from Alpiq and aventron support the sustainability journey engaged by Chiesi Farmaceutici. The two years contract grants to the customer the sustainable power supply from aventron’s 18 MW Italian wind power plant «Melfi II». The asset is located in Basilicata region (Southern Italy), produces emission-free energy and avoids 23,400 tons CO2 emissions per year. This agreement is a key milestone on the Italian market for all parties.

Optimizing planning security and risk management

Alpiq aims to create sustainable value in the coming years and play an essential role in facilitating the commercial integration of renewable energy into the Italian power market. Managing all residual risks in the portfolio as well as serving the needs of renewable energy producers and consumers at the same time are key success factors. Both Alpiq and the involved partners, wind asset owner aventron and end customer Chiesi Farmaceutici, increase their planning security and minimise market risks with this PPA.

Strengthening market position in Italy

Present in Italy since 1999, Alpiq operates its own gas-fired combined cycle power plants in Vercelli, Novara and San Severo as well as wind and photovoltaic farms in Sicily and small-scale hydropower plants in Piedmont. Alpiq offers trading solutions oriented to the industrial sector such as the supply of power and gas, as well as origination services, market access and risk management. The company’s diversified customer base is operating in industrial sectors such as chemical, automotive, food, energy, paper and ceramics. Alpiq expects the market to continue to grow and demand for PPAs to increase in Italy as well as throughout Europe.
