Alpiq EnerTrans S.p.A. operates at national and international level and was formerly the Italian subsidiary of infrastructure specialist Balfour Beatty plc. Since March 2015 it has been a member of the Alpiq Group, which now holds a 100% interest in the company. For the previous 14 years, the company had traded under the name of Balfour Beatty Rail S.p.A. and was one of the leading technology partners involved in the construction of Italy’s high-speed rail network.

The company traces its roots back to 1926, the year of foundation of SAE (Società Anonima Elettrificazione), which carried out the first major railway electrification project in Italy on the Bolzano–Brenner line.
