The three small hydroelectric power stations in the Swiss canton of Thurgau together generate an annual output of 9 gigawatt hours of electricity. The Model and Mühle power stations were put into operation on the river Thur in 1942 and 1950 respectively. The Widen power station has been generating hydroelectric power since 1989.
The two small hydroelectric power stations belonging to Hydro-Solar Energie AG in the Swiss canton of Berne have a combine capacity 0.9 Megawatt and generate 4.6 GWh annually. With a consumption of 4500 kWh this equates to a supply of electricity for around 1100 households.
Alpiq acquired the four plants from Ziegler Papier AG in 2007, in so doing strengthening its declared commitment to "small" hydroelectric power plants. The volume of electricity generated corresponds to the average annual consumption of some 2,400 households.
