What is a balance group?
A balance group is a virtual structure that groups market operators for billing and accounting purposes. The system was established by swissgrid, sole operator of the Swiss transmission grid. Balancing the energy generated and the energy consumed at all times creates costs. In order to offset these, swissgrid charges each balance group for its balance energy, i.e. for the difference between the scheduled values and the actual values of energy consumption and generation.

Why should I join?
Membership of a balance group is obligatory for any operator on the Swiss market unless they constitute an independent balance group. The advantages are clear: the larger the number of players in the group, the lower the balance energy costs. In fact, a large proportion of the variations can be offset within one and the same balance group. This is known as value difference packaging or difference bulking.
