Power supplier in Ticino

SES Locarno, Switzerland

Around 75,000 customers in the canton of Ticino draw electrical power from the Società Elettrica Sopracenerina SA (SES), headquartered in Locarno.

The SES supplies electricity to the entire northern part of the canton of Ticino. The 88 communities in this region consume around 750 million kWh of electricity per year. In contrast to other regions in Switzerland, most of the communities in the Sopraceneri have signed an agreement with SES, a company organised under private law, to supply their electrical power. Under the terms of the agreement, the communities receive funding from SES. In 2005 SES paid CHF 13.5 million to these communities.

SES draws electricity mainly from Azienda Elettrica Ticinese (AET) and, to a lesser extent, from its own two hydro power stations in Giumaglio and Ticinetto. SES has its head office on the Piazza Grande in Locarno and has a workforce of 165 plus 5 trainees in Locarno and Biasca.

Some time ago SES expanded its energy consulting services. The company promotes measures to enhance energy efficiency and encourage the use of renewable energies. The new product Elettronatura, a modern thermal power plant, two photovoltaic plants and an interest in several small-scale hydro power plants all attest to Sopracenerina's commitment to the environment.
